Everyone at the FIGC expresses their condolences for the passing of Carlo Mazzone, at the age of 86. Born in Rome in 1937, he passed a large part of his footballing career at Ascoli, later also wearing the jerseys of Latina, Roma, Spal and Siena.

He began his coaching career with the Marche club, leading Ascoli from Serie C to Serie A (1974), before leading the Bianconeri from 1980 to 1984. Mazzone was also the coach of Fiorentina, Catanzaro, Bologna, Lecce, Pescara, Cagliari, Rome, Naples, Perugia, Brescia and Livorno, entering the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2019, an honour established in 2011 by the FIGC and the Fondazione Museo del Calcio to celebrate players, coaches, referees and managers that have left an indelible mark on the history of our football.

“We bid farewell to a true icon of Italian football - says the FIGC President Gabriele Gravina - a man defined by profound values and principles, a prepared, courageous and passionate coach. He invented a unique style embodying seriousness and humanity at the same time. We won't forget him."

In remembrance of Mazzone, the FIGC has arranged for a minute's silence to be observed before the start of all matches in all competitions scheduled over the weekend, including those on Monday.
