Azzurrini in friendly loss to Serbia in Castel di Sangro

Following a victory in Lomza over hosts Poland in the 8 Nations opener, Italy U20 suffered a 1-0 defeat to Serbia in a friendly today in Castel di Sangro.

Rogan’s goal on the hour mark decided the game for the guests after Alberto Bollini’s side put in a solid first-half performance; the Azzurrini had three clear chances to take the lead but spurned them all.

Italy had their first chance in the third minute as Bove took it down, took aim and fired on target, only for Pavlovic to scramble it clear. Two minutes later, Cangiano’s first-time effort was saved by Micovic.

Bove had a go again in the sixth minute, forcing the Serbian defence into action.

Ten minutes later, Serbia had Azzurrini hearts in mouths as Radulovic’s effort crashed against the crossbar. Italy were in the ascendency as the first half wore on; Bollini’s team were unlucky not to take the lead on more than one occasion.

Bollini made a raft of changes at the break in the hopes of putting all of his players to the test. After a host of Italy chances, Serbia took the lead in the 67th minute through Rogan, who fired home with a first-time finish.

Italy were on the hunt for an equalizer and Ruggeri aimed a cross in towards Riccardi but Katic punched it clear, denying the Azzurrini what would have been a well-deserved draw.
