Italy hit three past Switzerland in Varese

Italy U20 beat Switzerland 3-0 in a friendly thanks to goals from Montevago (36’), Fabbian (48’) and De Nipoti (75’). Carmine Nunziata’s team had to weather a storm from an aggressive Switzerland side in the first half an hour as De Carvalho and Samba caused problems for the Italy back line. The Azzurrini then upped the ante and their quality shone through. Montevago opened the scoring, turning home from Terracciano’s ball in. The Azzurrini doubled their lead three minutes into the second half; Fabbian found a bit of space in the box and rifled his shot into the right corner of Hubel’s goal. De Nipoti capped off a good performance late on, putting a sumptuous effort past Hubel.

In his second game as coach at this level, Carmine Nunziata got his second win against another tough team following the 2-1 victory over Portugal in the Elite League. “I’m really happy with the boys’ performance,” Nunziata said after the game, “even though we struggled to deal with the initial pressure put on by Switzerland. Once we got into the game, we imposed ourselves on the match. These friendlies are important because they give you a chance to see some different players in action and, as a result, you get to broaden the squad. There are two big factors: the players, of course, but also the capacity to implement our style of play and a positive attitude. We do this because we have the World Cup in May and it’s vital to have a lot of options due to the various promotion and relegation playoffs at different levels of club football – we won’t know who is available.”

Before the game, a minute’s silence was held to commemorate the victims of the recent flooding in the Marche region.

The Under-20's next game is against the Czech Republic on 21 November in the Elite League.
